The Finnish Border Guard Takes Delivery Of Its First AW119Ke

AgustaWestland is pleased to announce that the first of four AW119Ke single engine helicopters for the Finnish Border Guard has been delivered during an official ceremony held today in Helsinki in the presence of various dignitaries including the Finnish Minister of Interior Hon. Anne Holmlund, Chief of the Finnish Border Guard Lt. Gen. Jaakko Kaukanen and Italian Ambassador H.E. Elisabetta Kelescian. The helicopters will be used to perform various tasks including border patrol, special operations and fire fighting. The delivery ceremony took place on the Finnish Border Guard’s 80th Anniversary of flight operations. This handover marks the first AW119Ke to enter service in the European law enforcement and homeland security helicopter market.

The Finnish Border Guard chose the AW119Ke in 2008 as part of its fleet modernization and enhancement programme. The aircraft will operate from Helsinki and Rovaniemi (Arctic Circle) bases, flying in the harshest weather conditions whilst covering the entire Finnish/Russian border. The Finnish Border Guard is also being provided with a tailored training and support package as part of the contract.

This purchase continues and strengthens the longstanding relationship between AgustaWestland and the Finnish Border Guard which has been supplied with AB206 JetRanger and AB412 helicopters. The Finnish Border Guard’s AW119Ke helicopters are fitted with dedicated tactical equipment and certified to perform missions using Night Vision Goggles (NVGs). The AW119Ke’s law enforcement and homeland security variant has a patrol time of approximately 5 hours and also has the largest cabin in its class which can be quickly reconfigured for different missions. The AW119Ke also delivers outstanding performance whilst having low operating costs. The AW119Ke will provide a quantum leap in operational capability and is key to the establishment of an all new generation helicopter fleet planned by the Finnish Border Guard.

The Finnish Border Guard adds to a large number of customers who are operating or have chosen this helicopter type for homeland security and public service applications in countries such as the United States of America, Mexico, China, Republic of Korea, Spain and Uganda. Approximately 190 helicopters have been ordered to date by almost 90 customers in nearly 30 countries to perform roles such as law enforcement, EMS, VIP/corporate transport, offshore transport and fire fighting.
The Finnish Border Guard is responsible for Finland’s internal security, reporting to the Ministry of the Interior. The main functions of the Border Guard are guarding Finland’s land borders and territorial waters, carrying out passport control at border crossing points, ports and airports, as well as law enforcement, maritime safety and performing search and rescue operations, especially at sea.

Rainer HELI-International and K-MAX® Cargo Helicopter Team for Unmatched Fire-Fighting Capabilities In California

Rainier Heli-International, based in Kirkland, Wash., recently helped to contain a major wildfire in California’s Sequoia National Forest with a company-owned and operated Kaman K-MAX® cargo helicopter.  The blaze, named the Bull Fire after it began on July 26, consumed nearly 16,500 acres of national forest lands by the Kern River northeast of Bakersfield.  The California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, known as CAL FIRE, assigned hundreds of ground-based fire fighters to the southern California area before the fire was contained in early August.

Rainier’s K-MAX®, flying under a U.S. Forest Service (USFS) contract from Kern Valley Airport, utilized its unique heavy lift capability and proprietary 700-gallon water tank and snorkeling system to drop hundreds of tons of water on the flames, assisting ground crews to contain the wildfire in about a week.

According to Richard “Lash” Larew, Rainier’s executive vice president, the company’s K-MAX®, currently based in Casitas, Calif., near Ventura, flies exclusively each year for the USFS from July to December, peak fire season in the western U.S.  “We’re on call 24/7, and completed the equivalent of an average month of flight hours in a week on the California fire,” said Larew.  “The USFS directs us to locations to handle initial attacks, and we fly up to seven or eight hours a day in some cases.”

Rainier vice president Steve Wright added that the K-MAX® has an excellent readiness record.  “The USFS classifies the K-MAX® as a heavy lift, or Type I, helicopter.  Our availability is nearly 100 percent, and unlike other heavy-lift rotorcraft, our maintenance costs are much lower.  We usually operate with one pilot, one mechanic and one fuel truck driver,” Wright explained.  “The K-MAX® features a simple design and very reliable single engine, optimized for repetitive heavy lift. It exactly fits the mission profile the USFS needs for effective aerial fire-fighting.  Other helicopters have to adapt to the mission. For this kind of work and weight, day in and day out, the K-MAX® is hard to beat.”

Larew added that Rainier purchased its K-MAX®, Aircraft No. 19, more than a decade ago and initially used the helicopter to supplement its logging operations.  “We were one of the original purchasers after the K-MAX® was certified in the mid-1990s.  We considered other uses for the K-MAX® and moved into fire-fighting.  Our USFS contract is full-service, and includes the aircraft and crew. To win the USFS contract, we designed our own water tank and snorkel system that enables us to fill the tank in one minute from lakes, rivers, streams or portable water tanks when natural sources aren’t available.”  Rainier’s one-of-a-kind K-MAX® tank system utilizes water but can accommodate fire retardants or other additives.  In the off-season, the company uses the helicopter for other heavy lift missions in the U.S. and overseas, including construction, placement of power line towers and oil rig support.

“Kaman is delighted that K-MAX® operators are so successful,” said Terry Fogarty, general manager of Kaman Helicopters’ Unmanned Aircraft Systems Product Group.  “The success of our manned K-MAX® operations is a testament to our program, and we’ll continue to provide the support necessary to help maintain the nearly 100% availability rates that the K-MAX® fleet has enjoyed,” Fogarty continued.

Brazil’s ANAC Certifies AFT Inlet Barrier Filter For AgustaWestland AW139 Helicopters

Aerospace Filtration Systems, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Donaldson Company, Inc. and a division of the Aerospace & Defense group, has received a Supplemental Type Certificate approval from Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Authority for an Inlet Barrier Filter (IBF) system for the AgustaWestland AW139.

A welcome equipment addition to this versatile aircraft, this new IBF prevents engine damage in adverse environments. South American AW139 operators now have the opportunity to realize the proven operating cost reductions and increased operational capabilities an IBF offers.

Donaldson Inlet Barrier Filter systems are already in use by AW139 operators worldwide in corporate, rescue, firefighting and utility missions.

Donaldson Aerospace & Defense partnered with AgustaWestland to ensure the design of a well engineered system that addressed the AW139′s operational requirements. After successful joint development of the IBF for the AW119 series, Donaldson’s engineering department worked closely with AgustaWestland’s technical team to refine the AW139 IBF design.

The new AW139 IBF system features low profile conformal fore and aft fairings with dual filter assemblies mounted on the existing engine doors, creating a sealed intake plenum. As with all certified Donaldson IBF’s, the AW139 system includes an alternate inlet air bypass system. This emergency bypass capability is an important IBF feature and is not included in most traditional sand filters and particle separators. A simple compact cockpit switch allows indication and activation of the bypass system. An integral Filter Maintenance Aid also allows for on-condition inspections, pre- and post-flight, to assist in mission planning and visual inspection of filter condition.

Providing the most comprehensive line of IBF solutions, Donaldson Aerospace & Defense is the industry leader in the design, development and manufacture of high-performance engine IBF systems for commercial and military propulsion systems.

Through their Donaldson St. Louis location, Donaldson provides certified IBF solutions for the following:
